Group Problem Solving:
The day before vacation a group of third graders tackled putting a very large marble maze together in my room. Directions from the box not included! They chose to create their own version instead of referring to the box. They included extra wooden blocks we have on hand, desk furniture, and each others ingenuity to make it work. It always amazes me that when given down time, how creative they can be for more than an hour. No electronics in site!

Math:
We used a fun creative activity to work on elapsed time. They created their own elf, but this time they had to record a start time and end time. Then their job was to figure out how long the activity took them. A bit of math and a very cute end product!
We are continuing working on measurement, adding and subtracting basics, as well as word problems. Students are getting more comfortable talking about their math thinking, and I am contributing this to our lessons using Math 360. Although we are still working with white chalk on the desks, I have ordered some liquid chalk pens so we can have a more healthy environment. Each student will receive one, as they are very expensive so hopefully we can make them last the year.
Third graders will be taking the SBACs this year. To get them ready we will be taking a math Interim Practice SBAC. This way I can teach test taking strategies, as well as review math concepts so we can relieve test anxiety. This means we will explore some practice tests, take the interim test, and then in May take the real SBAC test.

Recess FUN Photo!
When the snowballs become life size, and third graders spend recess time problem solving how to get it to the fort.......which is across the recess field!
Science:
Forces and Motion is in full swing! Teams have collected Knex pieces, followed a blueprint, and built a Knex car. In the last couple of days, they have learned about technical drawings and tried their hand at making a side view and a top view of their vehicles. This has also been a great way for us to practice our measuring! I am impressed by their willingness to try. There may be some technical drawing wizards in our midst.
