Third Grade SCience
|
Animal StudiesStudents will learn about Vertebrates and Invertebrates. The focus will be on similarities and differences in life cycles, traits that are learned versus inherited, adaptations, habitats.
Motion and DEsignWe will be using Knex to explore and build our knowledge of basic physics. There will be a great deal of the inquiry process embedded. Towards the end of the unit, students will create marble runs to show their understanding of the motion and design.
WEather and Climate |
PLant Growth and developmentThis year the plant lab has taken a front stage in the classroom. At the beginning of October, we will begin a weekly lesson and/or observation using our plant station. The third grade is fortunate this year to be working through Farm to School with Carol Stedman, a local farmer. In the spring, we will be taking a field trip to her farm, Clay Hill Corners. We will do some taste testing, and create individual salads designed for individual pallets.
MagnetismAfter an extensive exploration lab, students will create a simple design problem that can be solved by applying their knowledge of scientific ideas about magnets.

In this unit students will learn the difference
between weather and climate. We look at the
earth's climate zones, do graphing of weather
and learn how to analyze the data to make
predictions. I have hopes to have students
make some tools that help forecast weather
and create a weather station.

Makerspace
Engineering and Design Process
Every Friday this year, students will be learning the design process through STEM challenges and some engineering. Students will be creating cardboard automation projects which will hopefully wet their appetite for understanding how things work in the world. We will begin with learning about basic cams and work our way to a gear project. Parent volunteers during Makerspace times are valuable and welcome. Please email me if you are interested in helping out in your child's class.
