Math:
Third grade took advantage of a recent snow storm to use area and perimeter in real life application. They were challenged to make a snow fort to criteria that they agreed upon. I am hoping by making learning area and perimeter relevant to something they like to do, the concepts will stay with them.
The last couple of weeks we have taken SBAC interims in math and Spring Track My Progress assessments. The SBAC interims gave a good introduction of what the final spring SBACs will be like. By doing the interims, I got fantastic data to help each student fill in some gaps. Some of the items missed were standards we have yet to cover in class, so overall the scores I am seeing are making sense to me. I can talk about this further when we meet for conferences.
We are making steady progress through Module 3 and 4 as a whole. Some students need a bit of prompting to get through the Zearn Module independently. We are learning about stamina and integrity which are key to in getting through assigned work.

Karakuri:
Students persevered through our Karakuri project. Lots of learning in precise cutting, glueing, and patience. We talked a great deal about the fact that these are made out of paper, and they are our first attempt at learning karakuri.

Marble Runs:
The last two weeks we have been busy engineers! Third graders were challenge to make Marble runs with specific criteria. We also decided to work in groups of partners we usually do not work with to work on collaboration skills. I am proud of their efforts and strategies to make this work. This is the first year I added the challenge to get the marble to the top in a creative way. We had elevators, scoop buckets, and wheels mechanisms. This project also involved a few math concepts. One was to include the time it took them to complete the project, and to create a video to present their understanding of the balance of forces as the marble works it way through. This is challenging because they are having to apply their learning from previous lessons.
