Math:
This last week we tackled learning about measuring weight in metric units of 1 gram, 10 grams, 100 grams, and 1,000 grams or 1 kilogram. We had a day of using different kinds of scales to practice reading and using scales appropriately. We then are asked to do word problems regarding metric weights. This is a challenge to figure out what math operation to use. Eureka teaches them to use tape diagrams to shoe our thinking. Because of the challenge this poses, we began using a technique called Math 360. This gets all students working on large surface to show their thinking and discussing with each other strategies. This is a great way to pinpoint errors and to learn from them by having a safe discussion about math. Next week we will move to liquid measurement.

Science:
Third graders did concept cartoons of how living in a group is beneficial to animals. Here are a few stellar examples of their work.

This week we explored magnets through 7 stations which guided them in some basic understanding of how magnets work. There challenge is then to create a problem that can be solved with a magnet. These should be finished early next week.
